Diocesan Grandparents Pilgrimage
On Saturday 28th May, we held the first Grandparents’ Pilgrimage within our diocese when over 80 Grandparents gathered at the Shrine of Our lady Of Consolation, West Grinstead. The weather initially looked kind but quickly we became aware we were in one of the isolated spots where rain was forecast...and it did really rain!
Spirits were not dampened however and after a welcoming cup of tea provided by the wonderful parishioners from West Grinstead, we gathered inside the church. Fr David Goddard led us in saying the Grandparents’ Prayer, followed by an excellent history of the Shrine. Various activities then followed; some went up to the secret chapel and heard more of the story, some listened to a wonderful testimony from Mrs Lisa De Quay about her "Crown of Thorns " network and the importance of prayer, others celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation or focused on Adoration, and writing prayers for their grandchildren. Everyone, at some point, took some time to relax and catch up with old friends.
The day concluded with a wonderful Mass, celebrated by Bishop Richard, Canon Seamus Hester, Fr David Goddard, and Fr Peter Andrews, ably assisted by Deacon Seamus Mahon and Fr Simon Dray. We were blessed to have Paul Inwood playing the organ for us. At the end of Mass
Mrs Catherine Wiley from the CGA presented Fr David with a framed copy of the Grandparents’Prayer and a beautiful image of the extended Holy Family, including Ss Joachim and Anne.
The day concluded with Bishop Richard leading us in the Shrine Prayer, and then the sun came out!
