New Ayslum & Refugee Casework Job Available

Asylum & Refugee Caseworker (fixed term1 year)

JOB DESCRIPTION
Voices In Exile is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee reaching out to those seeking asylum, refugees and those with no recourse to public funds within Sussex & Surrey. It provides Immigration Legal Advice regulated by the OISC as well as a specialised casework & destitution service, a cookery group and peer support for those accessing its services. Voices In Exile is currently subcontracted by Brighton & Hove City Council to provide casework support to refugees arriving through the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Programme. An integral part of the service offered by Voices in Exile is the one to one holistic support offered to people through our caseworkers

We are seeking to appoint an asylum & refugee caseworker to help increase to enhance & widen our casework service. The post will report directly to the Casework Manager & be accountable to the Director & Board Of Trustees.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Providing advice, support and information on area such as; UKBA Support, Legal issues, Benefits & Finance , Housing, Health, Education & Employment.
• Providing effective advice and support for clients through crisis intervention to longer term integration through drop-in advice, appointments & outreach.
• Liaising and negotiating with relevant statutory and voluntary agencies on behalf of clients, as necessary
• Keeping full, accurate and up-to-date case records and statistical data as required by voices in exile.
• Participating in individual supervision, training and appraisal, as agreed with the Director
• Participating fully in regular caseworker team meetings
• Carrying out appropriate administrative tasks (e.g. word-processing, filing) in support of his/her own work and the Team’s if necessary
• Carrying out all the above in accordance with the aims and values of the Team, in particular confidentiality and impartiality and in accordance with the aims, values and policies of VIE, in particular its Equal Opportunities Policy
• Safeguard at all times confidentiality of information relating to staff and clients
• Preparing regular written and numerical summaries and reports of activity and progress in line with funding specifications for the VIE Director.
• Travel within Sussex on a weekly basis.

Person Specification

All experience may be paid or voluntary, full or part-time, in the UK or overseas. Candidates will be short-listed on the following specifications, and should write about each of them in the application form.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• It would be preferred if the applicant had a training record in related areas e.g. benefits advice and guidance, social work, mental health, Housing & homelessness, child protection, youth work, community work, legal training.
• At least one year’s experience of face-to-face work with clients, in a formal or informal setting.
• Insight into the needs, experiences and hopes of refugees and asylum seekers
• Experience and understanding of cultural diversity and the ability to work with people from a range of different cultures
• Experience of working with those for whom English is a second language.
• Experience of working with interpreters.
• Ability to be administratively self-sufficient


Desirable (but not essential)
• Classical Arabic
• OISC Level 1


KNOWLEDGE:

• Understanding of professional boundaries and appropriate relationships with vulnerable adults and children.
• Knowledge of the Housing & Benefits system.
• A firm grasp of Equal Opportunities issues.
• An understanding of the issues affecting individuals and families seeking asylum, the impact of social and economic disadvantage and hardship on people’s motivation, confidence and progress through education, employment and training.
• An understanding of the issues affecting people from asylum seeking and Black and Minority Ethnic communities regarding mental health and physical disabilities.
• Knowledge of the asylum system and process and its effect on people.
• Issues relating to voluntary sector working and partnerships with statutory bodies.


In addition to the above, candidates will be interviewed on the following if they are short-listed. Candidates need not write about these points on the application form:

• Commitment to the principles of confidentiality, impartiality and non-directive advice
• Excellent active listening skills
• Good spoken English, sufficient to provide advice in English, to advocate and negotiate on behalf of clients

• Constructive approach to working within a small team
• Ability to work within a faith-based organisation

Terms and Conditions of Employment

Salary: £18,000 - £22,500 Dependent upon experience

Hours: 35 hours a week

Holidays: 24 days per year plus public holidays (pro rata)

Because of the nature of the work for which you are applying, this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (exception) Order 1975 and you are therefore non entitled to withhold information about convictions which for other purposes are ‘spent’ under the provision of the Act
